In the winter of 2020, two very large transom windows were replicated for this extensive c.1900 barn restoration. The original handmade 34-light sash above the front door was simply tacked in against the framing & siding. No jamb. No flashing. We created a new opening at the opposite gable wall so both ends would have matching transoms. We fabricated custom jambs for both units. This unique and under-utilized church is a prominent feature in Westfield. Back in1905, it housed many worship services and pie sales. The circular tower window and surrounding woodwork had endured decades of water infiltration. Rot was extensive in the framing and “wagon-wheel sash.” New framing was spliced in wherever necessary. The lower portions of the wheel’s rim and numerous spokes needed replacing—a challenging endeavor as the original construction was not exactly symmetrical. Use of a ratchet strap, some creative spline work, and much belt sanding brought the wheel back into true. Our work on the iconic “Church St. Church” began in 2012 with one of the lantern windows whose rotted muntins failed during a windstorm. These sash windows required extensive part replication and reassembly. Lots of fun working with curved muntins and non-rectilinear glass! This C. 1835 structure, originally an Episcopal church, was first known as the Union Church. It now houses the Montgomery Historical Society and answers to the name Pratt Hall. The vernacular, gothic windows were removed from the openings on the west facade in 2018 and brought to the shop for full restoration treatment.
